La Ultima Luz is a contemporary autofiction that uses film to mediate the real and fictional, the complexities of silence and the survival mechanisms of imagination. It blurs the lines between Performer and Character in order to portray a self unraveling into unrecognition.&#38;nbsp;

A recently unearthed mine in Taxco Guerrero, Mexico. Was discovered by accident when a hotel was remodeling its bar to make space for a dancing floor. Inside they found the human remains and one of the richest mines in silver and gold in the world. Now it's a tourist attraction that holds a vault for seeds that will one day replant Mexico after an ecological disaster.


This short was part of the DISPERSAL solo exhibition.&#38;nbsp;
Dispersal is a collection of sculptural assemblages that enable contextual storytelling.&#38;nbsp; It draws inspiration from the Juarez radioactive&#38;nbsp; material accident, video game mechanics, a forgotten mine, the making of a monster and curiosity as it breaches containment in a multimedia instauration housing aftermaths of a life that is unfinished. 


Dispersal as:

&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; a biogeographical event?&#38;nbsp; 
is a fundamental process of an organism&#38;nbsp; moving away from its point of origin and&#38;nbsp; distribution limits. It is rare, infrequent and&#38;nbsp; seldom observed. 

&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; a characteristic of an unfocused mind?&#38;nbsp; 
is a failure of executive functions. 

&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; a strategy for making?&#38;nbsp; 
is to inhabit the incompleteness of it all, unable&#38;nbsp; to conclude for every piece is in dependence of&#38;nbsp; all the others. 

&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; a form of containment?&#38;nbsp; 
is to be in paradox. Do/n't deny the paradox. 

&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; decay?&#38;nbsp; 
it may be the spell for transmutation. 

&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; a logical structure?&#38;nbsp;

	GASPAR YANGA


GASPAR YANGA is a Black Liberation based evolving multimedia collaboration, born from RISE x FALL; between rubén garcía marrufo and maximiliano. Inspired by Gaspar Yanga, an enslaved African in Mexico, that escaped and formed a maroon society on what is now the state of Veracruz, the project takes from our mixed cultures as a border stranded mexican and an afro-chicanx artist, in the wake of empire. Weaving time collapsing narratives through vide installation, site-specific sculpture 

assemblages, and participatory performances as a means to explore new havens.

AT THE END OF EMPIRE exists as live performance and a large-scale three-channel video installation.
 

An audiovisual montage of documentary performance presents the artists in their day-to-day, performing the actions necessary to transit the inbetween. In undressing and veiling they will find stranding echoes of the forgotten eternal.


A ritual performance shows bodies engaging in the metamorphoses of space and self, rupturing with violent change, and imbibed into membrane as geometric choreography. A collapse, merging, and final discarding.

el cielo más hermoso is a series of collaborative interviews that act as a prologue to a larger narrative of border-crossings for latinx nationals living in the US. The subjects decided how and where they would recount their stories of escape, migration, and refuge. The
border artist works at the edges of diaspora, the work acts as a rumination on my own narrative of witnessing and enacting crossings, the everyday life of an immigrant, and what kinds of documentation allow for one to truly live.

Prototypes is a physical container for the discussions, debates, reflections, and questions posed by Converge 45’s Portland’s Monuments &#38;amp; Memorials Project (PMMP), which for the past eight months has brought people together to consider the conditions and impacts of public monuments, including those that have been removed and those that should be built.

Gathered into a 5,000 sq foot space in Northwest Portland, this exhibition assembles over 30 artists, displaying a mixture of artworks, projects, and proposals. Prototypes highlights Oregon artists engaged in the national reckoning of our markers of history that compound racial injustice and social inequity. The exhibition contextualizes their work within past reflections on critical history within our shifting relationship to the violence of the American experiment. Also included in Prototypes is a selection of ideas shared with Converge 45 through its Open Call, which collected ideas for new and re-envisioned monuments and memorials.

In&#38;nbsp; the year of 1992, with the 500 anniversary of the "Discovery of America” a statue of Columbus was installed in the downtown area of mexicali. Days later it made the local newspaper. Someone, in an act of protest, had cut the head of Christopher. 

 
I have no early memory of encountering monumentality, but I remember the decapitation of a statue and people jumping walls.

In 2011 a year after the 7.2 earthquake, the Municipal Institute of Art and Culture of Mexicali was restoring a plaza in the Valley of Mexicali, specifically in Estacion Delta. Artists and the Delta community worked together to rebuild it, day and night. Depicting the landscapes of its surroundings as a beautiful mosaic, but, before finishing they put pictures of themselves between glass and cement. Signing their own work and leaving a reminder of the faces of those that revitalized the once abandoned public square.

I take inspiration from both of these events to propose a simple collective intervention. Using the Penrose Infinite Tiling Pattern to create a continual unfinished horizontal monument that houses peoples messages into the future. To build this open time platform it is necessary that the community is involved and have to be present as the slabs start its drying process so they can intervene the wet cement. I like to imagine that this message will find its way into the future hoping it can be a reminder of where people once stood and that we can't ignore the ground under our feet on which we stand.
